Two Artists: Andrea Zittel and Monika Sosnowska takes us to The Schaulager in Basel, Germany where an exhibition entitled 1:1 is celebrating both artists and their innovative careers. Both Zittel and Sosnowska focus on the design of spaces, and in doing so each respond to their own surroundings: to culture, lifestyles, and traditions. In order to come to terms with the very different contexts in which they live and work, the artists design structures that are related to their existing situation while, at the same time, look beyond it. The exhibition title, 1:1, refers to both the resulting “parallel realities” and to the actual scale of certain works by each artist. Both Zittel’s objects, which are rooted in tangibility, and Sosnowska’s sculptures, which feel like physical explorations of space, test the relationship of art and reality in life size. Zittel and Sosnowska are linked by a shared interest in the modernist era, its social utopias, and its concrete efforts to unite art and life.
